Good thinking, FC.
I'll try and prepare something in the next couple of days or so with tips for using Paint in puzzle solving. At the moment, the things that seem most useful to me are (not in any particular order):-
* removing the general background colour
* removing a specific colour
* checking whether two or more colours match
* enlarging images
* checking whether anything is "hidden" in an image
* adding text
* overlaying sections of an image
* rearranging layout (e.g flipping, rotating, changing the order of columns/rows etc)
* measuring the height or width of an image (or part of it) in pixels
* colouring in parts of a grid
But if there's anything else which would also be useful to anyone, post here and I'll add it to the list.

Excellent idea FC & T22. It will be very much appreciated.
I had no idea that you could do some of those things in Paint
Will that include cutting out or removing sections and moving them around?
 |
Why do I do this to myself? |

There is now a Paint Basics section on Puzzletome (below Back To Basics).
If you can't see it, you will need to go here to register.

What a wonderful addition to BTB. The times I've known what I want to do with a puzzle but haven't known how are too many to count but now I have a nice handy reference section for when I forget, which is often
Thank you T22 for taking the time to write it

Brilliant. I wish I had known these tips a year ago. I can think of dozens of puzzles that I have printed out and cut up, needlessly. I can't wait to get onto a puzzle where I can try them out.
Thanks T22, great job

Please note: You will need to register at Puzzletome and start the "Back to Basics" section (this can be be done from the 'Content' link on the main page). |

It should now be visible for anyone registered for the site. We still recommend that new puzzlers register for Back to Basics anyway. |

My fault! Now it should be both visible *and* accessible as long as you're registered. Sorry about that. |

Hmm... I don't seem to see this. Should it be in "content", below "Back to Basics" in the menu?

It's in the forum below Back to Basics, rather than in the content section. We didn't add it as an additional 'contest' on the site because there are no puzzles associated with it.
For your convenience, here's a direct link to the forum: http://www.puzzletome.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=235 |

If you have any problems or questions with it, please give me a shout.
And the same goes for Back to Basics, obviously. BTB is a run down of common puzzle solving techniques with explanations, worked examples and illustrative practice questions.
